We_ were bound_ home_ in__ October__ from the shores_ of La_-brador__ Trying to head_ a strong_ Nor'easter_ and snow__ too____ But the wind_ swept_ down upon us_ and the day_ was_ dark_ as night_ just before_ we made_ the land_ at Bac_-calieu___ Now we tried_ to clear_ the island_ as we brought her_ fur_-ther south_ But the wind_ from out_ the Nor'east_ stron_-ger blew____ Till our lookout_ so-on_ he shou-ou-ted_ and there_ lay_ dead_ ahead_ though_ a snow_ squall_ Loomed_ the rocks_ at Bac_-calieu____ __ But it was_ hard down by_ the tiller_ as we struggled_ with_ the sheets_ tryin' our best_ to haul_ 'em in_ a foot or_ two__ Till our decks so_ sharply til_-ted_ We could bare_-ly_ keep_ our feet_ as we struggled_ On_ the rocks_ at Bac_-calieu____ Now the combers_ beat_ her under_ and I thought she'd_ ne_-ver rise_ And her main_ boom_ it was_ bending_ nigh_ in two____ With her lee_ rails_ two_ foot under_ Three hands_ upon the wheel_ Sure_ we_ hau_-led_ her_ from the rocks_ at Bac-_calieu_ To leeward_ was_ the island_ to windward was-as_ the shore_ and_ That blinding sleet_ could cut you_ through and_ through____ But our hearts were_ beating gladly_ For no long_-er_ could_ we gaze_ down to lee_-ward_ at the rocks_ of Bac_-calieu_ Down to lee_-ward_ at the rocks_ of Bac_-calieu_
