La chanson raconte l'histoire d'un homme qui part en voyage, laissant derrière lui une femme qui ne semble pas vraiment comprendre qu'il est sérieux cette fois-ci. Au fur et à mesure qu'il avance vers sa destination, il imagine les réactions de celle qu'il aime : elle se réveillera, lira le message qu'il a laissé, puis tentera de le joindre, sans succès. Bobby, peu à peu, réalise que ses départs répétés lui ont fait perdre sa crédibilité, même si ses sentiments sont sincères. Malheureusement, malgré ses tentatives pour lui faire comprendre sa détermination à s'en aller, elle reste dans l'illusion qu'il finira toujours par revenir.
